Cinco de Mayo in Tokyo (May 5)
Tacos, Fajitas, Margaritas and much more
Mexico marks its national independence day every September 16th, but every May 5th sees large celebrations take place around Mexico, the United States and by expat communities abroad. This day, now known as Cinco de Mayo, commemorates the Mexican victory at the Battle of Puebla on May 5th, 1862.
Outnumbered nearly 2 to 1, approximately 4,000 Mexican soldiers under the command of Ignacio Zaragoza defeated the forces of Napolean III at the village of Puebla in central Mexico. Observed to varying degrees throughout Mexico today, Cinco de Mayo is actually now commemorated on a larger scale in the United States having joined the list of annual cultural festivals like St. Patrick’s Day and Chinese New Year. It’s a day of food, music, dancing and fun!
